What is a Thermal Compression Climate Control?

ThermoLift’s Thermal Compression Climate Control (TC3) is a high-efficiency, highly integrated appliance utilizing globally patented Hofbauer Cycle technology, which provides concurrent heating, cooling and refrigeration capabilities for residential applications at full- or partial-load conditions. The air-source heat pump is projected to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by up to half*, while completely eliminating the use of harmful refrigerants. 

What is an air-source heat pump?

An air-source heat pump transfers heat from the outside to the inside of a building in winter, and vice versa in summer.

How does it work?

The TC3 is powered by natural gas and other low- and carbon-free fuels, including hydrogen, along with the energy from the ambient atmosphere—essentially, the heat in the air—as it moves heat into or out of a building.

Sounds great … how does it benefit my business?

In a typical application in the Northern U.S. and Canada, the TC3 significantly reduces annual energy consumption for heating, cooling, water-heating and refrigeration functions, creating significant operational-costs savings while eliminating tens of thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide emissions—all with a single, high-efficiency device priced about the same as complex, less-efficient traditional systems.

Am I the right customer for this?

ThermoLift customers include all commercial operators who want to lower their space-conditioning costs and improve their HVAC efficiency. We also work with installers, dealers, builders, architects and other space influencers operating on the cutting edge of carbon reduction.

We actually have some pretty specific refrigeration requirements.

The TC3 can maintain high performance and energy efficiency in large commercial applications at extremely cold temperatures—as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius, ranges where traditional, less-efficient refrigeration systems require secondary backup devices.

Is the TC3 for new constructions only?

While ideal for new construction, the TC3 can easily retrofit existing hydronic and forced-air space-conditioning systems in commercial cold-climate applications, while achieving capital-cost parity against separate, state-of-the-art heating, cooling and water-heating systems.

Prove it!

ThermoLift successfully demonstrated the sixth generation of its Hofbauer Cycle prototype at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in August 2018, producing energy efficiency benchmarked against the current state of the art. Multiple published research papers have certified the innovative thermodynamic cycle and validated its energy-savings potential, while a 2017 U.S. Department of Energy review of 300 commercial HVAC technologies ranked the TC3 No. 1.

* Based upon independently verified lab test results (ORNL, 2018) for performance efficiency and Energy Plus software simulating emissions savings. The TC3 energy and cost savings will vary upon application, climate and input source energy utilized for power production of the local and regional electric grids, among other factors.
